During the 1944 election, Republicans attacked FDR’s dog, Fala. People thought this ridiculous, too. FDR mocked these attacks in what became known as “the Fala Speech.”
To support FDR’s 1944 re-election campaign, the Independent Voters Committee of the Arts and Sciences for Roosevelt printed an illustrated version of the speech. Some of the artists were notable illustrators of children’s books, though all were then better known for their cartoons and other illustrated work.
Syd Hoff illustrated the American worker’s support of FDR.
Lynd Ward illustrated organized labor’s support of the war effort.
Dog-lover Crockett Johnson illustrated Fala himself.
